I recently saw this commercial and it made me incredibly angry. I have been teaching at risk students this semester from very diverse backgrounds, including cultural, social, and religious differences. Every time I see something like this, I think of them. In our country, we have a separation between CHURCH and STATE. Anyone from any background can express themselves freely and worship (or not worship) any god they want. Our country was build on Christianity, but that is not what sustains it now. It is ignorance like this that makes me ache for my students who are outcasted by expressing themselves or following the cultural norms they know. In response to Rick Perry, it's not a matter of a "war on religion" it's a right of expression. "Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again." Really? It seems to me many of our worldly problems are caused by faith and religion. I do not support you.
Rant over. It's some food for thought. If you agree or disagree, leave a comment! I'd love to hear your viewpoints.
Disclaimer: I am not angry at religion, I am angry at people who assume religion is the remedy for our worldly problems.
Update: Here's a republican commercial I can appreciate :)

Allie,
I could not disagree with you more! Why would that commercial anger you? Isn't Governor Perry just as entitled to his opinion as you are to yours?
Just because 2 people out of 30 aren't Christians, why should you cater to the 2 instead of letting the 28 practice Christianity such as saying the pledge of allegiance (including "one Nation, under God") They are not saying the 2 can't do their thing (Or not.) But the 28 should not have to give in to the 2. Everyone should have the right to practice their own religion.
Obama is Wrong when he says "We are no longer a Christian Nation." (85% of Americans are Christians.)
I am not saying that Religion is the answer to our nation's problems or that God will help Tebow win football games. But to take the right to pray out of schools is wrong.
I will soon be leaving to go to Gabe's Holiday Program at the school. I would prefer to go to his Christmas Program but the Liberals won't let me do that any more.
I disagree with your thinking but I still love you and I always will.

Yes, he is certainly entitled to his opinion and I am not angry that he stated his opinions in an advertisement, I am simply angry at the close minded-ness of his statements. I also do not think religion will solve any of our nation's problems.
I am simply stating my opinion from the standpoint as a teacher. I can understand your viewpoint of catering to the 10% not being fair. However, if we were to truly *cater* to those 2%, we would conduct school in *their* religion. Catering to the 2% does not mean cutting Christianity out of school. As common courtesy, we keep religion out of public school.
However, from my personal experiences, it is not just 2 out of 30 who are not practicing Christians. Outside of small town Iowa, that number is much larger. Even in a large city in Iowa, the number grows. Imagine outside of Iowa and outside of the Midwest how much that number will grow.
I do not think we should prohibit anyone from worshiping any god they wish. I just do not believe a PUBLIC school is the place for it. And I certainly don't think religion is the answer to the economic problems our country faces.
I do not think we will ever agree on the topic, but I appreciate you stating your opinion on the matter.
Wow, that campaign ad literally made my jaw drop when I watched it.
Allie, as a christian, I must say that I completely agree with the repulsive feeling you had watching that commercial. I don't believe that is a 'shame' that gay men and women can serve in our military-in fact I believe it is a low over due right that is just being granted. Not being able to celebrate christmas is not the tragedy, the tragedy is thinking that one religion is superior to others. if we want to talk about christmas in schools, then we should celebrate and embrace the many other religious celebrations as well. I think the worst part is that he made the two issues appear to be equal, where the sexual orientation of someone and their ability to serve in the military is a completely different issue that the cultural differences we are facing in schools. I also, do not support him.
